Private Hire - FAQs

  • Where do you sail from?
We depart from and return to Ipswich Waterfront.
  • Where do you to sail to?
Well, it all depends on the time of year, the weather, and the tides. We do our best to give you the best experience out on the River Orwell, and we use the onboard motor to help us against the wind - and of course, the sails will be up when the wind is behind us.
  • Are children welcome on board?
Yes, families with children are always welcome. Please note that children must be supervised at all times by a responsible adult.
  • Are dogs allowed on board?
Only service dogs are permitted on board.
  • Is the barge accessible for wheelchair users?
As Sailing Barge Victor is a historic working barge, we do advise passengers that there are uneven surfaces, narrow walkways and steep steps down to the lower deck facilities which passengers attending must be aware of. In order to board the barge, passengers must also be able to use a gangway - please view this video below on how to access the barge . We offer the opportunity for you to come down to the barge and check out the access before making a booking.
  • What are your toilet facilities?
We have a flushing toilet system in operation, which is situated below deck.
  • Do you serve drinks on board?
Yes, we have a fully licensed bar on board. We also sell soft drinks, and tea, coffee and some snacks too.
  • What's is like below deck?
We have lots of seating below deck, where you can take a break from the sun (or the rain!). You can buy drinks from the bar, and sit and enjoy your Cream Tea or Supper Cruise here too.
  • What happens if there is bad weather forecast?
If you have booked tickets and then the weather forecast would make it unsafe to sail we will cancel the event. We will contact you so you can rearrange your trip out with us on an alternative date.
  • Are a minimum number of people needed for the barge to sail?
We reserve the right to cancel if insufficient numbers of people are booked onto an event. In such an event, we will contact you and offer you the opportunity to change to another date.
  • Do you cater for a range of dietary needs on your Cream Teas and Supper Cruises?
Our meals for the Supper Cruises are prepared by Bistro on the Quay/Mariners Restaurant. To accomodate your dietary needs we must know five days in advance so that the chefs can order in alternative ingredients.
  • I'd like to book, but I'm a little nervous about being on out on the water. Can you reassure me?
Victor is a working sailing barge, and the layout is what you would associate with a victorian vessel. We take all necessary measures to ensure your safety and comfort. This includes hazard strips, clear side decks, and side rails. When departing we ask all guests to listen to the safety announcement. We comply with all MCA Class 5 and 6 requirements. If you have any concerns please contact us in advance, or speak to one of the crew when on board. contact the skipper
